Epic Recs: January 2014

Books of Amber, one of my top favorite blogs to peruse, came up with a fantastic idea and I jumped on the chance to participate.  The idea is called Epic Recs, or as they call it, "a book-pushing club".  I signed up and got paired with Kayla from Bibliophilia, Please - a blog I previously did not know existed but I now super like.  Kayla and I have very similar tastes in books and I am sure they couldn't have picked a better match!

So, I instantly checked out Kayla's blog (again, love it) and her Goodreads profile and found what books she had read and wanted to read.  I noticed that we both had the same books listed but one of us had read them and one of us wanted to.  Perfect!

I knew exactly what book I wanted to recommend to Kayla first.  She had listed Lenore's book, Level 2 (or Memory of After, but I am a staunch supporter of the first title, as is Kayla, since that's the title on both our early copies.)  I am SO excited to have her read it.  Lenore is releasing the second book in the series this year (in case you didn't know) and you better believe I am going to be grabbing it up.  You can read my review of Level 2 here, if you are so inclined.  I hope Kayla enjoys the book, too!

Kayla's first recommendation to me is Poison by Bridget Zinn, which has been on my TBR list since it dropped early last year (and really before that since I read ARC reviews of it.)  This is the synopsis via Goodreads:

Sixteen-year-old Kyra, a highly-skilled potions master, is the only one who knows her kingdom is on the verge of destruction—which means she’s the only one who can save it. Faced with no other choice, Kyra decides to do what she does best: poison the kingdom’s future ruler, who also happens to be her former best friend.

But, for the first time ever, her poisoned dart . . . misses.

Now a fugitive instead of a hero, Kyra is caught in a game of hide-and-seek with the king’s army and her potioner ex-boyfriend, Hal. At least she’s not alone. She’s armed with her vital potions, a too-cute pig, and Fred, the charming adventurer she can’t stop thinking about. Kyra is determined to get herself a second chance (at murder), but will she be able to find and defeat the princess before Hal and the army find her?

Kyra is not your typical murderer, and she’s certainly no damsel-in-distress—she’s the lovable and quick-witted hero of this romantic novel that has all the right ingredients to make teen girls swoon.

They didn't have a copy at my library (because they are snails at getting new books that are not mysteries or thrillers) but I had just received money for Christmas for books, so yay!  I downloaded the Kindle and I am ready to start reading it tonight!

I will be reviewing Poison when I get finished, so be sure to look for the follow-up, not to mention the next recommendation from Kayla for February!

Now excuse me while I go charge my Kindle.  :)

  1. You are so sweet! Thanks so much for signing up, and I hope you enjoy the Epic Recs experience.

I have yet to read Level 2 (none of this Memory of After business) but I've been meaning to check it out since it was released. I guess I should hurry up with that, huh?

Poison was such a cute read! I hope you enjoy it :)

  2. I cannot wait to see what you thought of Poison, and I am so glad that I was lucky enough to get paired with you! This truly could have been disastrous if we had been paired with people who didn't read like us. :-D
