What Do You Think #9
Today's Question:
What do you think of the New Adult genre?
My Personal Thoughts:
Personally, I think that the New Adult genre is filling a void in fiction. There are children's books, middle grade books, tween books, YA books, and adult fiction. But where are the books centered on the college-age crowd? That's where New Adult comes in. I think the name "New Adult" is horrid and needs to be changed ASAP, but I think the genre itself is not going to go anywhere and I am excited for it.
What are YOUR thoughts?

I'm just beginning to hear about this genre but agree that the name is awful. I need to find a book that's considered new adult to try.
ReplyDeleteI think I've heard it one other place than here. Otherwise, I haven't heard of it and...well..could care less what it's called. I read what I read, regardless of genre. :)
ReplyDeleteOkay, true, I mostly read mysteries and crime thrillers. :) So that's why I don't care what it's called, because I probably won't read it anyway.
ReplyDeleteI had not even heard about this and it seems stupid!
ReplyDeleteBryan, you crack me up!
ReplyDeleteMe too. I think I could probably make an even more informed decision if I read a book that I knows come from this genre.
ReplyDeleteDo you think they should just incorporate this into the YA genre?
ReplyDeleteI think it's a marketing idea, NOT a genre (and that technically Young Adult isn't a genre, either). It's a way to capture the 18-24 year-old-market. As a reader, I don't see the point. When I was in middle school I was reading books about women in their 20s, and in my twenties I read books about teenagers. What people want is a good story, regardless of the age of the protagonists.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it's a terrible name. To my mind, if a "young adult" is a teenager, then technically speaking, a "new adult" must be younger. Brand new, right? Or am I being too technical? It will be interesting to see what happens to it as a genre. When I was that target age range, I don't remember being consumed with a strong desire for books about people my age. But then again, like Tasha says, I read everything from children's book to YA to adult books.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't heard of "new adult" but it seems kind of pointless.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to see if it sticks around long, Carol.
DeleteI like this idea, but I really don't care for how it is categorized!!
