Review: The Constant Princess by Philippa Gregory

I loved reading about Katherine of Aragon and her life leading up to the scandal with Anne Boleyn. I knew some of the story from watching Showtime's The Tudors, but there was a lot more to Katherine that was in this book about her life before Henry VIII. Gregory gently weaved Katherine's tale of love, passion, ambition, determination, loyalty, and despair. There was a while in the beginning and middle where I felt the story got stale and dragged on a bit, but I kept reading and discovered the pace restored itself and the book ended with me very engaged in it.

This was my first book by Gregory and I will be reading the rest of her Tudor series, skipping over The Other Boleyn Girl, though, since I know that story so well I don't know if I could get through the book. The one following, though, The Boleyn Inheritance, is definitely on my list!

What do you think of Philippa Gregory or of The Constant Princess?

  1. I have been wanting to get into Gregory's books. I have always loved the time period and the court intrigue. Thank you for sharing the review!

  2. The only Gregory I've read is The Other Boleyn Girl, and I really enjoyed it, so I have no idea why I've never picked up another one. :)

  3. I've never read any of Gregory's work, but will be later this summer for my book club.

  4. I've read The Other Boleyn Girl and enjoyed it very much.. Her other boos are on my TBR, just don't know when I'll get to them :)

  5. I have the audio version of this one in my itunes library - one of these days I'll get around to listening to it. I've always felt that Katharine of Aragon and Anne of Cleves were my favorites of Henry's wives. Katherine because she never relented in her position that she was the rightful Queen and Anne for making the best of a horrible situation.

  6. I haven't read any of these books either, but have always wanted to. Did the Royal Wedding inspire you to read something royal related? :) These do sound good, so maybe I'll have to check some out!

  7. This was the first Gregory book I read (ok, I listened to it). I had no idea who she was when I picked up the book. I really liked the new perspective on Katherine! Glad to see you enjoyed this one too.

  8. Ang- It is one of my favorite time periods. You should definitely try this one out!

Trisha- There are always more books we want to read than we have time to read them!

Kathy- I will be interested to know what you think.

Desert Rose- I know- so many books, so little time!

Suzi- Gregory delves deep into Katherine's psyche and gives a very interesting explanation of the scandal.

Becky- I started this before the Royal Wedding. Unfortunately, I cannot read that fast! lol I have been meaning to get to this one for a while and finally had time to do so. I hope you do check these books out!

Heather- I liked that, too! I really enjoyed how deep it went into who she might have been, not just to the public, but in private.
